K I N D L I N G
KINDLING is an exploration into mental health & emotional processing, the intersection of psychology, neurology, & physiology, and my own experiences with mental illness & alienation. Through the processes of research, concept development, design, and creation of the piece I am able to better understand myself & those around me and untangle my thoughts
The term ‘kindling’ has multiple uses within the fields of neurology and psychiatry. Just as the common usage refers to a mass of tiny sticks igniting a fire, psychiatrists use this word to describe an increased susceptibility to mental health decompensation due to recurring stressors.
This result of these investigations is a body of work that echoes the pain of being burned, of self-immolation & self-sabotage, and of mounting mental burden & internal turmoil. I reference the scarred and battered textures of the natural world & body to translate these ideas into metal form.
